The History of the TCHS Chapel
The Heart of Campus
Located in the heart of Teurlings Catholic High School, the chapel has long served as a place of prayer, reflection, and stillness within the daily rhythm of campus life. For students, faculty, and visitors, it offers a quiet space to pause, gather, and reconnect with faith.
From its earliest days, the chapel was envisioned not as an accessory to campus, but as its spiritual center.
Foundation and Spiritual Vision
The chapel was built in 1984 under the leadership of then-Chancellor Father Joseph Brennan, whose vision helped establish a sacred space rooted in faith, humility, and service. His leadership shaped the chapel as a place where prayer and daily life could naturally intersect.
Father Brennan’s approach to ministry emphasized presence, simplicity, and deep spiritual relationships, values that continue to be reflected in the chapel today.
A Legacy of Faith and Service
The spiritual foundation of the chapel is closely tied to Father Brennan’s relationships with Saint Teresa of Calcutta and Charlene Richard. During her lifetime, St. Teresa visited Lafayette, a moment that remains a meaningful part of our history.
In recognition of this connection and legacy, the chapel was later dedicated to St. Teresa. Her life of compassion, humility, and service continues to serve as an enduring example for the Teurlings Catholic community.
Charlene Richard’s spiritual witness and faith also form part of the chapel’s story, reflecting the deep roots of prayer and devotion that have shaped the school community over generations.
Marks of Faith and Tradition
The pews within the chapel were donated from St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, connecting the space to the wider Catholic community and its shared tradition of worship. These furnishings carry with them a history of prayer that extends beyond the walls of the school.
The chapel is also home to sacred relics, including relics of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton as well as Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica. These relics serve as a tangible connection to the communion of saints and the enduring spiritual traditions of the Church.
A Living Space of Prayer
Today, the chapel remains an active and meaningful part of campus life. Students gather for Mass, quiet prayer, and reflection, continuing the legacy of faith that has shaped the space since its founding.
Rooted in history yet alive in the present, the chapel stands as a reminder of the school’s commitment to faith formation and the enduring power of prayer at the heart of Teurlings Catholic High School.
