Summer Reading 2017
As the end of the school year approaches, it is time to start looking to summer activities and the 2017-2018 school year. Teurlings Catholic High School requires students to read at least one book over the summer break.
Incoming freshmen must choose one of the following: Bluefish (by Pat Schmatz), The Age of Miracles (by Karen Thompson Walker), Gym Candy (by Carl Deuker), or The Hiding Place (by Corrie Ten Boom). In addition to this, 9th grade students taking honors English must read Stargirl (by Jerry Spinelli).
Teurlings students moving to the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade will be required to read a book of their choosing. The book must be at least 150 pages long. Please encourage your child to read and to approach this project with integrity. In other words, your child’s book must be on the student’s grade level and it must be a book that the student has never read before. Students are NOT allowed to read any of the books read and taught in TCH classes. Please see the permission sheet for specific requirements.
For the 10th-12th graders, suggested reading lists are readily available online. The English teachers will be directing students to these sites in class. Of course, many books available to high school readers are not appropriate. Please be sure that your child is reading something that you are comfortable with. AR Book Finder (under the Collections tab) and Common Sense Media both have links available to alert parents to any questionable content in many books. Reading the book along with your child is another way to ensure that you are comfortable with your child’s book, and to start a dialogue with your child about issues that the book may bring up.
A link to the permission slip is below. Your child will not receive credit for a book that he/she has not had approved by a parent or guardian.
We do not test in the summer. Your child will be testing, discussing, and/or writing about their book in their English class during the first week of school.
In addition to this, Honors and Dual Enrollment students will be required to read an assigned text. Please see the list below.
Required Reading for Honors/DE students:
9th: Stargirl (Jerry Spinelli)
10th: The Book Thief (Markus Zusak)
11th: Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury)
12th: The Island of Dr. Moreau (H.G. Wells) AND The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Robert Louis Stevenson)
