* Please refer to the Math Track Chart on the course description page.

Any 9th grade student who is interested in applying for admission to the Teurlings Honors Courses must meet the following criteria and fill out an application form.

Placement into 9TH Grade Honors:

  •  A student must have earned a 90% average or higher in the selected course at the end of the 8th grade first semester.

  •  Math (H) and/or Science (H):  Using the most recent standardized test scores, a student must have scored at the 90th percentile or higher in Math and/or Science.

  • English (H):  Using the most recent standardized test scores, a student must have achieved an average of 90% using the reading and language NPR .

Honors Courses for qualified 9th grade students are as follows:

  • Honors English I

  • Honors Physical Science

  • Honors Algebra I

  • Honors Geometry*

*Proof of credit in Algebra I is required.

Please read the guidelines for each course carefully and note that some courses require the student and parent to sign a contract prior to scheduling the course. Several courses also require the payment of a fee to cover supplies, special tests, or books. The class fees are due at scheduling time and are nonrefundable.

SCHEDULING GUIDELINES FOR 10th – 12th GRADE STUDENTS:

Full course descriptions and course requirements are listed on the Course Descriptions page.

Please keep in mind that your child must list three (not merely one or two) alternate choice elective courses in addition to the seven main-choice courses.  If one or more of the main-choice courses cannot be scheduled, the school will consider the alternates (in descending order as listed) as main choices without necessarily informing you or the student.

Make and keep a copy of the schedule form for your records as soon as you complete and sign it.

Schedule changes will not be made after the master schedule is completed unless a change is necessary:

  • Because a scheduling error was committed by the school.

  • Because your child is completing an academic course, which substantially affects some scheduled course, in the summer before the new school year.

  • Because he or she must take a course failed this school year which was not available during summer school.

The school will consider your request for a change in your child’s schedule only if the school judges that he or she was improperly placed in a course.  Note that poor performance in a course, dislike of the sequence of courses, or dislike of a teacher does not merit consideration for a change. This consideration will take place during June.  Dates will be posted in the newsletter.

Teurlings Catholic High School reserves the right to cancel any class if a sufficient number of students have not signed up for the course or, due to scheduling, not enough students can be placed into a course.

Please read the guidelines for each course carefully and note that some courses require the student and parent to sign a contract prior to scheduling the course. Several courses also require the payment of a fee to cover supplies, special tests, or books. The class fees are due at scheduling time and are nonrefundable.

TCH Individual Student Needs Program

The Individual Student Needs Program at Teurlings Catholic High School is of limited scope based on a college preparatory schedule of classes and not a special education curriculum. Students must have a recent (no older than three years) professional assessment on file at TCH in order to qualify for the program.  Only a formal evaluation from an educational diagnostician, psychologist, speech/language pathologist, reading specialist, or other educators in the field of learning will be considered in determining if our limited program can fulfill the student’s needs.

TCH is able to offer several individualized intervention techniques such as:

§         Time extensions for tests

§         Oral testing

§         Enlargement of fonts on reading materials, tests, study guides, etc.

§         Preferred seating in the classroom

§         After school tutorials in some subject areas

A family physician can prescribe treatment for health and physical challenges but cannot qualify a student for educational modifications at Teurlings Catholic High School.  The most frequent treatment for students with ADD or ADHD is medication.  Those students may bring their prescribed medications to the front office along with the permission form and receive them at proper times, dispensed and recorded by front office personnel.

Applications of new students are examined before a student is accepted for enrollment.  Special needs must be declared on the enrollment application for assessment.  There are instances when TCH cannot accommodate the educational needs of a child.

CERTAIN SCHOOL, STATE, AND COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS

Please note that certain courses may not be taken at certain grade levels and some courses require prerequisites.

The state and TCH do not require credits in Foreign Language for graduation. However, two years of the same foreign language is required for TCH Honor graduates, TOPS, and many colleges require at least two courses in the same foreign language for admission.  If the student plans to take only two such courses, or if the student is deficient in English, it is recommended that he or she take the two courses in the junior and senior years.

The state and TCH do not require credits in the Fine Arts (Art, Fine Arts Survey) but many colleges require or recommend at least one or two courses of this kind for admission.

The state and TCH do not require physics, but some colleges, including Louisiana State University, require physics for admission.

LOUISIANA BOARD OF REGENTS SCHOLAR AWARD

The courses required for students to be eligible for the Louisiana Board of Regents Scholar Award:  (a certificate, not a scholarship) are the same as the TOPS core curriculum.  In addition, this award requires at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
