In September, 29 year old Bobby Fischer became the United States' first world chess champion by beating Boris Spassky of Russia.

 

Mark Spitz wins a record seven gold medals at the Munich Olympics.

 

January 1, 1973 - The European Economic Community which was founded in 1958 grew today when the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and Denmark joined existing member countries of Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany.

 

A 69 day standoff at Wounded Knee in the Pine Ridge Sioux Reservation, South Dakota, ended on May 8, 1973.
